Van Vechten would serve as Hughes' de facto editor and agent for years to
come. His close personal and professional relationships with Alfred and
Blanche--they were not only his close friends, but publishers, too--
gave Van Vechten a priveleged position at the publishing house. In turn,
both Alfred and Blanche relied on Van Vechten to keep them abreast of
current trends in black literature. Click on the letter to listen to Emily Bernard's commentary.

While you listen to the conversation (about 15 minutes in length), you can still move around the site, look at images and read excerpts and letters. This is a large file to download.
