Money seemed to flow through Hughes' fingers. On top of the
difficulty of making a living as a black writer, Hughes had to contend
with his own natural generosity. Although from the beginning, Van Vechten
is adament about not establishing a relationship with Hughes based on
money, he was always there for
Hughes when his financial situation was dire. And Hughes always paid him
back. Click on the letter to listen to Emily Bernard's commentary.
