November 18, 2008 | by rlyons

Nicole Kidman and Charlize Theron will star in the film adaptation of Random House editor-at large David Ebershoff’s 2000 novel THE DANISH GIRL (Penguin, 2001). Kidman will play artist Einar Wegener, “the world’s first postop male transsexual,” with Theron playing Wegener’s artist wife, Gerda. The novel was adapted to screen by Lucinda Coxon, and Anand Tucker is attached to direct. All translation rights are with Viking US.

David Ebershoff’s other works include Pasadena and The 19th Wife, both published by Random House.

Life, Love, and the Philadelphia Eagles…
November 7, 2008 | by rlyons

Tom McAllister’s IT’S JUST A GAME, was acquired by Ryan Doherty at Ballantine Books from Katherine Boyle and Veritas Literary Agency (North American rights only). McAllister’s latest is a memoir of a kid from Philadelphia as he faces the trials of young adulthood—from the death of his father to cancer and the long lines working the grill at a famous cheese steak joint, to his acceptance into the Iowa writing program and making a serious commitment in love—all told within the context of being a psychotic Philadelphia Eagles fan.

RH to translate and publish PANORAMA
November 3, 2008 | by rlyons

Paul Taunton has acquired world English rights for Random House to the first-ever English translation of PANORAMA, an epic, semi-autobiographical novel by H.G. Adler, author of The Journey (Random House, 11/08) from Paul Zsolnay Verlag in Vienna. Translated once again by Berlin Prize winner Peter Filkins, PANORAMA is the story of Josef Kramer, one of the last of the Prague German-speaking Jews, who is raised and educated in Prague, survives the camps and the destruction of his community, and finds spiritual rebirth in England. Along with The Journey, this new translation firmly establishes Adler as a crucial precursor to W.G. Sebald, and is a vital part of the only fictional trilogy of Shoah literature from a German-speaking survivor of the camps.

His two previous novels are titled Pretty Birds and Windy City.

RH to Publish New Book on the Neuroscience of Insight
October 30, 2008 | by rlyons

Will Murphy at Random House has acquired a new book on the neuroscience of insight, written by Mark Jung-Beeman and John Kounios, internationally acclaimed cognitive neuroscientists at Northwestern and Drexel Universities, respectively. The book will explore the nature of creative breakthroughs and “eureka” moments, drawing on the authors’ pioneering new research into brain functioning that allows us, for the first time, to understand the surprising ways in which insight happens, how mental impasses that inhibit problem-solving can be overcome, and how we can learn to deepen our own powers of insight.

Murphy acquired North American rights from Suzanne Gluck at the William Morris Agency.

Frankfurt 2008 Hotlist
October 13, 2008 | by rlyons

This year, we are pleased to highlight the following titles at the Frankfurt Book Fair:

Ballantine
Nonfiction:

COUNTERCLOCKWISE: Mindful and Transformative Power of Possibility by Ellen Langer (August 2009): Written by a leader in the positive psychology movement, this is an important book that challenges our assumptions about health, well-being, and age. If we could turn the clock back psychologically, could we also turn the clock back physically? The film rights have been optioned by Jennifer Aniston. Manuscript is due before the fair.

WORRY WELL: Understanding and Managing Your Relationship with Anxiety by Jerilyn Ross, MA, LICSW with Robin Cantor-Cooke (April 2009): Ross, a pioneer in the field of anxiety, has created the essential guide to truly understanding the nature and, yes, the benefits of worrying. She outlines simple, effective techniques that will help women learn to take charge of their emotions and conquer needless stress. Manuscript is in.

Fiction:

THE CHARLEMAGNE PURSUIT by Steve Berry (December 2008): From perennial New York Times bestseller comes a powerful new international thriller. Cotton Malone finally learns the truth about his father’s death, and at the same time unearths a manuscript that could reveal secrets that, if true, would change the world and everything in it….

FAULT LINE by Barry Eisler (March 2009): Our first book by this critically acclaimed, bestselling author is our lead title on the Spring list. This pulse-pounding and intelligent thriller is one part Lee Child, one part Vince Flynn—but all Eisler. This is the story of two very different brothers who are forced to confront their own painful secrets when one of them becomes a target in an international struggle for a powerful and mysterious new technology. More than just their lives are at stake in this riveting political drama.

A mention: THE WIVES OF HENRY OADES, by Johanna Moran (Spring 2010). This moving debut novel based on a true story recounts the dramatic story of an Englishman who emigrates to New Zealand with his wife and children only to have them kidnapped and held for years by the Maori. Convinced that they are dead, he starts a new life in California and remarries. Years later, his first family resurfaces and he is faced being charged with bigamy, aided by the incredible courage and good-heartedness of his two remarkable wives. Manuscript is due before the fair.

Random House:

Non fiction:

THINGS I’VE BEEN SILENT ABOUT by Azar Nafisi (December 2008): From the beloved New York Times—and international—bestselling author of Reading Lolita in Tehran comes this striking portrait of Azar Nafisi’s complex family. Nafisi delves deeply into her painful and paradoxical relationship with her mother—a woman who created complicated fictions about herself, her family and her past. We will have a complete manuscript available shortly.

HOW TO WIN A COSMIC WAR by Reza Aslan (April 2009): A provocative new work of non fiction in which the author lays out, for the first time, a comprehensive definition of the movement behind and surrounding terrorist organizations such as al-Qaeda, and his surprising conclusions on how to deal with this enemy he terms ‘Jihadism’. Aslan, the critically-acclaimed author of No god but God, is the Middle East Analyst for CBS News and a regular commentator on Anderson Cooper 360.

Fiction:

THE SONG IS YOU by Arthur Phillips (April 2009): From the bestselling author of Angelica, The Egyptologist and Prague comes a brilliant new novel of obsession, longing, and redemption, centered on the unconventional relationship that develops between a grieving man and the young singer who guides him to reconcile with the heartbreaks and mistakes of his past. The full manuscript is available.

Del Rey Acquires Comic Book and Graphic Novel Rights to THE TALISMAN
October 13, 2008 | by rlyons

Del Rey announced today the acquisition of the comic book and graphic novel rights to THE TALISMAN by Stephen King and Peter Straub. The creative team on the project will be announced soon, and the first issue of the monthly comic is planned for late summer/early fall 2009.

Originally published in 1984, THE TALISMAN is the story of a young teen named Jack Sawyer, who can save his dying mother only by retrieving a magical talisman. To find it he must cross back and forth between our world and the frightening and dangerous landscape of its “twinner” counterpart. The hardcover edition, published by Viking, spent 12 weeks in the #1 slot on the New York Times list. Both THE TALISMAN and its sequel, Black House, are in print with Ballantine Books. Television rights to THE TALISMAN are under development by Steven Spielberg and Kathleen Kennedy.

“Illustrating THE TALISMAN in the depth that it deserves will involve at least 24 issues of comics, probably more,” said Del Rey Editor in Chief, Betsy Mitchell, who acquired the project from agent Ralph Vicinanza. “It’s a tremendously visual story, filled with images that burn in memory long after the book has been closed.”

King’s Dark Tower comics consistently inhabit the top of the comic book sales charts, and his recent series, Dark Tower: Long Road Home was the top-selling comic book in North America in March 2008.

About the Authors:

Stephen King is the author of more than fifty books, all of them worldwide bestsellers. He is the recipient of the 2003 National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters.

Peter Straub is the author of 17 novels which have been translated into more than 20 languages. He has won numerous awards for his work, including the World Fantasy Award for Best Novel, for Koko.

About Del Rey:

Del Rey Books (http://www.delreybooks.com) was founded in 1977 as an imprint of Ballantine Books, a division of the Random House Publishing Group, under the guidance of the renowned Judy-Lynn del Rey and her husband, Lester del Rey. Del Rey publishes the best of modern fantasy, science fiction, and alternate history. No stranger to comics, Del Rey launched Del Rey Manga in 2004 in conjunction with Japanese publisher Kodansha, and quickly began to acquire original graphic novel projects as well. Current and upcoming projects include a four-color graphic novel developed with pop singer Avril Lavigne, Make 5 Wishes; the graphic novel In Odd We Trust, by Dean Koontz and Queenie Chan; the first-ever graphic novel set in the world of Terry Brooks’ Shannara universe, Dark Wraith of Shannara; original manga starring Marvel characters in X-Men: Misfits and Wolverine: Prodigal Son; and a four-color original graphic novel set in the Outlander universe, scripted by author Diana Gabaldon herself.

Ballantine Acquires Fowler’s Next Two Novels
October 7, 2008 | by rlyons

Therese Fowler’s new novel BREAKAWAY—a spellbinding story about a woman caught in a custody battle over her son that is complicated by her troubling dreams—some say visions—that her son is in danger, and her ex-husband may be the source. This novel is part of a 2-book NA deal with Linda Marrow at Ballantine. Fowler’s recently published debut Souvenir has been sold in 10 languages and her second novel Reunion will be published March ‘09.

Two New Acquisitions for Del Rey
October 7, 2008 | by rlyons

Dean Koontz, for world rights to a second graphic novel starring his New York Times bestselling character, Odd Thomas. Koontz’s first graphic novel, IN ODD WE TRUST—written by Koontz and Queenie Chan and illustrated by Chan—was a Publishers Weekly and Indie graphic novel bestseller. The new book, also set in the time period prior to the first Odd Thomas novel, will again be illustrated by Chan, with the adaptation by Fred Van Lente. This series was packaged by Nancy Cushing-Jones of Broadthink on behalf of Dean Koontz.

C. E. Murphy, author of THE QUEEN’S BASTARD and many other fantasy novels, for two new contemporary paranormal fantasies, tentatively entitled TRUTHSEEKER and WAYFINDER, in a deal for world rights, negotiated by Jennifer Jackson of the Donald Maass Literary Agency.
