Tom McAllister's IT'S JUST A GAME, was acquired by Ryan Doherty at Ballantine Books from Katherine Boyle and Veritas Literary Agency (North American rights only). McAllister's latest is a memoir of a kid from Philadelphia as he faces the trials of young adulthood--from the death of his father to cancer and the long lines working the grill at a famous cheese steak joint, to his acceptance into the Iowa writing program and making a serious commitment in love--all told within the context of being a psychotic Philadelphia Eagles fan.

Paul Taunton has acquired world English rights for Random House to the first-ever English translation of PANORAMA, an epic, semi-autobiographical novel by H.G. Adler, author of The Journey (Random House, 11/08) from Paul Zsolnay Verlag in Vienna. Translated once again by Berlin Prize winner Peter Filkins, PANORAMA is the story of Josef Kramer, one of the last of the Prague German-speaking Jews, who is raised and educated in Prague, survives the camps and the destruction of his community, and finds spiritual rebirth in England. Along with The Journey, this new translation firmly establishes Adler as a crucial precursor to W.G. Sebald, and is a vital part of the only fictional trilogy of Shoah literature from a German-speaking survivor of the camps.

RH to Publish New Book on the Neuroscience of Insight

Will Murphy at Random House has acquired a new book on the neuroscience of insight, written by Mark Jung-Beeman and John Kounios, internationally acclaimed cognitive neuroscientists at Northwestern and Drexel Universities, respectively. The book will explore the nature of creative breakthroughs and "eureka" moments, drawing on the authors' pioneering new research into brain functioning that allows us, for the first time, to understand the surprising ways in which insight happens, how mental impasses that inhibit problem-solving can be overcome, and how we can learn to deepen our own powers of insight.

Frankfurt 2008 Hotlist

This year, we are pleased to highlight the following titles at the Frankfurt Book Fair:

Ballantine
Nonfiction:

COUNTERCLOCKWISE: Mindful and Transformative Power of Possibility by Ellen Langer (August 2009): Written by a leader in the positive psychology movement, this is an important book that challenges our assumptions about health, well-being, and age. If we could turn the clock back psychologically, could we also turn the clock back physically? The film rights have been optioned by Jennifer Aniston. Manuscript is due before the fair.

WORRY WELL: Understanding and Managing Your Relationship with Anxiety by Jerilyn Ross, MA, LICSW with Robin Cantor-Cooke (April 2009): Ross, a pioneer in the field of anxiety, has created the essential guide to truly understanding the nature and, yes, the benefits of worrying. She outlines simple, effective techniques that will help women learn to take charge of their emotions and conquer needless stress. Manuscript is in.

Fiction:

THE CHARLEMAGNE PURSUIT by Steve Berry (December 2008): From perennial New York Times bestseller comes a powerful new international thriller. Cotton Malone finally learns the truth about his father's death, and at the same time unearths a manuscript that could reveal secrets that, if true, would change the world and everything in it....

FAULT LINE by Barry Eisler (March 2009): Our first book by this critically acclaimed, bestselling author is our lead title on the Spring list. This pulse-pounding and intelligent thriller is one part Lee Child, one part Vince Flynn--but all Eisler. This is the story of two very different brothers who are forced to confront their own painful secrets when one of them becomes a target in an international struggle for a powerful and mysterious new technology. More than just their lives are at stake in this riveting political drama.

A mention: THE WIVES OF HENRY OADES, by Johanna Moran (Spring 2010). This moving debut novel based on a true story recounts the dramatic story of an Englishman who emigrates to New Zealand with his wife and children only to have them kidnapped and held for years by the Maori. Convinced that they are dead, he starts a new life in California and remarries. Years later, his first family resurfaces and he is faced being charged with bigamy, aided by the incredible courage and good-heartedness of his two remarkable wives. Manuscript is due before the fair.

Random House:

Non fiction:

THINGS I'VE BEEN SILENT ABOUT by Azar Nafisi (December 2008): From the beloved New York Times--and international--bestselling author of Reading Lolita in Tehran comes this striking portrait of Azar Nafisi's complex family. Nafisi delves deeply into her painful and paradoxical relationship with her mother--a woman who created complicated fictions about herself, her family and her past. We will have a complete manuscript available shortly.

HOW TO WIN A COSMIC WAR by Reza Aslan (April 2009): A provocative new work of non fiction in which the author lays out, for the first time, a comprehensive definition of the movement behind and surrounding terrorist organizations such as al-Qaeda, and his surprising conclusions on how to deal with this enemy he terms 'Jihadism'. Aslan, the critically-acclaimed author of No god but God, is the Middle East Analyst for CBS News and a regular commentator on Anderson Cooper 360.

Fiction:

THE SONG IS YOU by Arthur Phillips (April 2009): From the bestselling author of Angelica, The Egyptologist and Prague comes a brilliant new novel of obsession, longing, and redemption, centered on the unconventional relationship that develops between a grieving man and the young singer who guides him to reconcile with the heartbreaks and mistakes of his past.
Del Rey Acquires Comic Book and Graphic Novel Rights to THE TALISMAN

Del Rey announced today the acquisition of the comic book and graphic novel rights to THE TALISMAN by Stephen King and Peter Straub. The creative team on the project will be announced soon, and the first issue of the monthly comic is planned for late summer/early fall 2009.

Originally published in 1984, THE TALISMAN is the story of a young teen named Jack Sawyer, who can save his dying mother only by retrieving a magical talisman. To find it he must cross back and forth between our world and the frightening and dangerous landscape of its "twinner" counterpart. The hardcover edition, published by Viking, spent 12 weeks in the #1 slot on the New York Times list. Both THE TALISMAN and its sequel, Black House, are in print with Ballantine Books. Television rights to THE TALISMAN are under development by Steven Spielberg and Kathleen Kennedy.

"Illustrating THE TALISMAN in the depth that it deserves will involve at least 24 issues of comics, probably more," said Del Rey Editor in Chief, Betsy Mitchell, who acquired the project from agent Ralph Vicinanza. "It's a tremendously visual story, filled with images that burn in memory long after the book has been closed."

King's Dark Tower comics consistently inhabit the top of the comic book sales charts, and his recent series, Dark Tower: Long Road Home was the top-selling comic book in North America in March 2008.

Ballantine to publish JULIET

Today, Ballantine Books pre-empted a much anticipated auction for JULIET, an ambitious, brilliantly imaginative new novel that reinvents the world's most famous love story. It was announced today by Libby McGuire, Ballantine publisher, and Random House Group executive editor, Susanna Porter, who will edit the book. They acquired American rights from Daniel Lazar at Writers House.

Debut author Anne Fortier, interweaving a tale of contemporary and medieval Siena, tells the story of a young woman who discovers her family heritage may be descended from the true story behind Romeo and Juliet. Described as "a cross between The Thirteenth Tale and The Birth of Venus, with a dash of Shakespearian wit and romance thrown in," the novel has created much excitement among New York and foreign publishers heading to the Frankfurt International Book Fair in two weeks.

Fortier is a native of Denmark who moved to the United States in 2002. The subject of the novel was inspired by her mother, who helped Ms. Fortier with research in Siena as her daughter wrote the novel at home in Arlington, VA.

Ballantine plans to publish JULIET in spring 2010.

Khanna, who is named one of the 75 most influential people for the 21st century in the October issue of Esquire, will examine the future of diplomacy in his new book, HOW TO RUN THE WORLD, which is slated for publication in 2010. The Second World has become the leading statement on the world's rapidly shifting power dynamics, and in his new book, Khanna will provide the roadmap for global leadership to manage mounting rivalries and urgent challenges such as poverty and climate change.
