6 Set against the slope on this wedge of flat ground was cottage. It glowed bonelike in the dark with the tall trees behind it and its round, porthole-shaped windows set like sockets into the blank white plaster. The door had been barred with two heavy barrels, one of which now lay overturned, spilling food tins and newspaper in a fan-shaped confusion over the snow. (p 53)

Cottages like this one pepper the wooded hills and mountainsides in Carinthia, for the most part now falling into terminal disrepair. Though the cottage Voxlauer comes to live in in The Right Hand of Slee p is depicted as dreary and damp, in reality they are often indescribably idyllic; housing Voxlauer (and thus the narrative consciousness) in just such a cottage was in fact the fulfillment of a childhood dream.
