Every booklover knows the sinking feeling when a favorite book is damaged by water, or its dust jacket rips, or a page comes loose. To throw the book out is unthinkable (you've had it since childhood; it's out of print; it's a book!), the damage isn't serious enough for professional attention, but you don't want to risk further damage. What do you do?
The Booklover's Repair Kit provides the solution. This elegantly packaged do-it-yourself kit gives you almost everything you need to repair the most common "bad things that happen to good books."
Each kit includes:
- The Booklover's Repair
Manual, which was written and
illustrated by experts on the
preservation of books, reviewed
by conservators, and tested by a
panel of novices of different
ages and aptitudes. It begins
with a basic lesson about the
construction of books, and
proceeds with step-by step
instructions for
more than 20 repair projects, illustrated with both
frameable, instructional
drawings by master bookbinder
Timothy C. Ely and original
photographs by Leonard Morris. It is also augmented with
memories and legendary quotes
about the collecting and general
care of books and about the
passions they inspire in book
lovers. The
Manual is handsomely
designed and bound in
hardcover.
Timothy C. Ely is an internationally known artist, designer and educator. His illustrated manuscript books and bindings are in collections all over the world. His Portland, Oregon studio, Planetary Collage, is dedicated to the arts of book and print.
New York based photographer Leonard Morris's fine art and advertising images are in public, corporate and private collections in the United States.
- 25 repair items (many in multiples), which run the gamut from neutral pH adhesive, a bamboo brush, transparent mending tape, a stainless steel microspatula, and mat board to cotton gloves and bristol board. The mending materials are of the highest archival quality, and the only materials not supplied are common household items such as paper towels and scissors. Each Kit includes sufficient mending materials of archival quality to repair 25 or more books. Tools and materials are not only difficult to find in one source, but would cost well over one hundred dollars if purchased individually.
- A source list for materials.
The Booklover's Repair Kit is a must-have item--and the perfect gift--for all bibliophiles.
"The kit's price may seem steep, but think of it as a
helper that keeps on helping. It contains a hardbound instruction manual
with illustrations and many tools to help fix your books; a
professional's tools like cotton library tape, a micro-spatula and a
bamboo brush. Depending on the type of repairs you're doing, each kit
can fix 25 to 50 books. If you run out of some of the professional
bookbinder tools, you can order more without having to buy a completely
new kit. A reorder form is in the book." --Albuquerque Sunday Journal
"This beautiful item, roughly the
size and shape of an unabridged dictionary, opens to magic; little
compartments neatly outfitted with bulldog clamps, brushes, cotton
gloves, mat boards, erasers, tapes, a dust cloth, a cutting board, a
knitting needle, a spool of thread, a glue stick, paper, and a bone
folder. Ellis, co-author of a handsome previous effort, At Home With
Books, as tribute to beautifully designed private libraries, clearly
hopes to inspire us to biblio-perfection." --Miami Herald
"This is clearly aimed at serious bibliophiles
or those who love them and just as clearly it will make a splendid--and
useful--gift for anyone who treasures the books in their life." --Publishers Weekly
"This kit is a must-have for every Home Depot-minded bibliophile." --Preservation Magazine
"This is the perfect accessory for the antiquarian book lover or book enthusiast who does not always
have the necessary time for tracking down these items. In an age where
personal libraries are making profound and timely return to prominence,
The Booklover's Repair Kit is a welcome accoutrement." --The Christian Science Monitor
". . . by helping me to restore several books,
The Booklover's Repair Kit felt more like a series of gifts, one that's
going to last me into a future where, I have a feeling books will only
become more prized as works of art. And in the meantime, it costs far
less than a device to read an e-book." --Orlando Sentinel
"Brilliant, innovative Estelle Ellis has produced an indispensable first
line of defense for our most valued yet most used treasure. This kit is
an essential for every booklover who takes pride in keeping our fragile
heritage in good shape." --Barbara Goldsmith,
Author, Historian, Preservationist
