Changing things up with Karin Slaughter

I know authors always say that they are really excited about their next book, but Undone, my new one, is very special to me. I started working on my Grant County series over ten years ago, and over time, the characters have become part of my life. Everything that happens to them is like watching something happen to a good friend. With each book, I felt closer and closer to pediatrician/coroner Sara Linton, police chief Jeffrey Tolliver and detective Lena Adams.

In 2006, I decided to change things up and created a new series with a character named Will Trent. Will lives in Atlanta and works for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. His stories feel more urban to me, but they’re really touching on the same issues I work on in my Grant County series—what happens when violent crime rips a family, a community, apart? What happens to the people that death leaves behind?

I was so enchanted with Will that I wanted to write more about him. After going back to Grant County in Beyond Reach, I decided that I wanted to combine the two series. First, I needed a partner for Will. He’s very much a loner and that’s worked well for him for his entire life, but I’m never a writer who likes to keep things predictable. Faith Mitchell fit the bill in Fractured, the next story in Will’s series. She’s not a love interest by any stretch (Will has enough relationship problems to last him a lifetime) but she slowly becomes Will’s best friend—something he needs much more than a lover.

Over the next week, I’m going to talk a bit about the characters you’ll find in UNDONE—what makes them tick and what makes their lives combine. I’ll also tell a little bit about myself.

I have never blogged before, but I’ve written a few newsletters that I send out to people basically begging them to read my books. (If you want me to beg you, too, you can sign up on my website). I also have a lot of contests that I do, like this one where you can take a picture of your pet reading one of my books. Oh, and don’t forget me on Facebook.

If you’re still reading this, please also note that UNDONE is called GENESIS in the UK, so please don’t order GENESIS thinking you’re going to get a brand new book and then email me because it cost you eleventy billion dollars to get it shipped over. I promise you not a word has been changed (except for that color/colour thing).
