Press Release

Dear Producer/Editor,

I am happy to announce the publication of bestselling author Andrew Carroll’s latest book, GRACE UNDER FIRE: Letters of Faith in Times of War, which goes on sale on March 6, 2007. I recognize there are a lot of other war books out there, but I’d like to emphasize why this one is different, as well as some of the many potential feature ideas related to the book.

Andy’s Passion for Letters & Letter-Writing (and the Fire That Inspired It) — In December of 1989, Andrew Carroll lost everything he owned, including all of his family’s letters, when his home in Washington, D.C. burned down. This gave Andy a greater appreciation for the importance of letters, and, over time, he was especially saddened to learn that many veterans were throwing their letters away. In 1998, Andy launched “The Legacy Project”—a national, all-volunteer initiative to preserve wartime correspondence. In the past nine years, Americans have shared with Andy more than 75,000 never-before-seen letters (and now e-mails) from every conflict in our history.

Heroic Individuals, Untold Stories, & Newly-Discovered LettersGrace Under Fire features 50 extraordinary letters on the subject of faith, religion, and God. Every one of the individuals and letters in this book is a possible feature story in itself, and we can put you directly in touch with the letter writers (or contributors), who live all over the U.S.

Religion & War: Are There Atheists in Foxholes? Where Is God in Wartime? — Andy sees these troops who have written about faith as great, unrecognized theologians, and Grace Under Fire can spark an intense conversation about a host of moral, political, and philosophical matters. Andy is also on a mission to encourage places of worship across the country to do more to support our men and women in uniform.

The Cross-Country & Overseas Book Tour — Andy will be traveling around the U.S. and abroad (he is scheduled to travel to Afghanistan & Iraq in late spring) throughout 2007 and 2008, and he will be bringing with him: his prayer book that miraculously survived the 1989 fire, original war letters from the Legacy Project’s archive, and professionally-produced video and audio footage of specific letters.
