Reinterpreting History: How Jesse James Differs from Standard Accounts

THE BANDIT CASUALTIES
The six bandits who survived the Northfield raid fled south and west, tending their wounds and eventually abandoning their horses as they evaded hundreds of pursuers. After they slipped through the town of Mankato, they elected to split into two groups. The James brothers, exhausted and hungry but unwounded, separated from the others, stole a pair of horses, and soon made rapid progress. They eventually escaped to Missouri through the Dakota Territory and western Iowa, despite two more clashes that left at least one of them injured. The Younger brothers were captured after the separation; each of them was wounded further in a final gunfight, and Samuel Wells was killed.
This composite photo shows the outlaws who were captured or killed. Clockwise from top left: Clell Miller, killed at Northfield; William Stiles, alias Bill Chadwell, killed at Northfield; Cole Younger, captured near Madelia during the escape; Bob Younger, captured near Madelia; Jim Younger, captured near Madelia; Samuel Wells, alias Charlie Pitts, killed near Madelia.
