For his Author's Desktop, Richard Russo spent a few days traveling around Maine gathering images that inspired Empire Falls or could easily be evoked by its pages.
All of the photos were taken by Russo in early April, 2001, and the captions are his.

"Another good title for Empire Falls, if it hadn't already been used, would have been A River Runs Through It. Most of central Maine's mill towns were built on the banks of rivers, often near waterfalls, which, before the state was wired for electricity, were used for power."
