"Xian was the capital of the Tang Dynasty and the starting point of the great Buddhist monk, Hsuan Tsang's journey West. I arrived by air from Hong Kong nervous that my Hong Kong tourist visa would get me stopped at immigration. But I got through. My then girlfriend (now my wife) Zhongmei Li met me at the airport and we spent a couple of days taking in the sights and getting ready for our own trip west. Here we are in a tourist pose atop the ancient Ming Dynasty Wall that still stands around the old imperial city--though the wall you see wasn't built until about 800 years after Hsuan Tsang's era."
