Legend has it that the Princess Dzugudini fled from the old stone city called Great Zimbabwe to found a new dynasty of rain-making queens across the Limpopo River in Loveduland. (It was the present Queen of Lovedu -- Modjadji V -- we were searching for.) We stood on the stone parapets of Great Zimbabwe, looking out across the green valley, and tried to imagine how lively it must have been centuries before when the great stone terraces were full of people, and Chinese traders walked among them. When we scrambled down to the valley, we came upon a medicine woman sitting in the doorway of her mud hut. As we talked, I wondered: Does this woman share common ancestors with the Lovedu Queen? Will Modjadji V look like this?
