Comments Rebecca Hirsch Garcia
"A Golden Light"
2014 O. Henry Award-winning Author

Let's put it this way: when I first began to accept that this was real, and not a really clever and cruel practical joke, I started laughing, literally laughing, with happiness. Then I screamed. Then I laughed some more (I'm laughing as I write this). I can't remember a time when I didn't know what the O. Henry awards were. I can't remember a time when I didn't want to be among the winners, when I wasn't reading and re-reading the anthologies themselves.

To have something that I've wanted come true, and so suddenly, is surreal.

Author's Desk

Right now I'm working on a collection of short stories about the horrors of the mundane, to which "A Golden Light" is thematically linked.

About the Author

Whenever I think of writing the image that comes to mind is an excavator holding a brush, delicately sweeping all the excess dust and debris out of the way. I'm always surprised at how unlike the story I was imagining the stories I write are. When I edit I'm always hoping to rid myself of all the indulgent excess flourishes I put in, searching for the story's true form.
