Whether you're feeling fierce or ferocious,
we've got what you're looking for dahling.
No one gets in without being asked. And with
her untamable hair, large forehead,
and gawky body, Tookie De La Créme isn't expecting an invitation.
the exclusive, mysterious place on top of the mountain—never
dares to make an
appearance in her dreams...
Every work of fabulous fiction needs an auteur. An ink slinger. A creative hand gently guiding a cast of characters—who have stories and minds of their own, dahling—to their ultimate destiny. Modelland's Tookie De La Créme ended up in one such scribe's rather dry, cracked, unmanicured, chipped-nail-lacquered hands: those of Ms. Tyra Banks, who was a mere fifteen years old when she started modeling, the same age as Tookie. Coincidence? I think not.
After establishing an Intoxibella (you call them supermodels) career that involved her sporting lace petticoats and lacier panties on boats, she upped and runway-walked away from it all to pursue her dream of becoming America's next top television producer. She created—what else—America's Next Top Model, which is observed, obsessed over, and fixated on in over 170 countries. And how could we overlook her two-time Emmy Award-winning talk show, The Tyra Show? Ms. Banks is known to have done some interesting things on the telly, such as telling the world to pucker up to her gluteus maximus and interviewing quite a few world leaders. Tyra became the first woman seen on both prime time and daytime TV shows. You may call that ambitious—I call that a work-a-how-in-the-hell-aholic. Soon TyTy became the super businesswoman she always wanted to be—less is never more, dahling. She even attends the ivy-covered Harvard Business School to hone her pork chops. And we mustn't forget her revolutionary World Wide Webby fashion and beauty site: typeF. Try saying "World Wide Webby" fast, three times. I dare you.
Now that you're here, keep your smize and ears open. If you're looking for a leading voice that empowers women, a female who, like a good waxing, rips open the definition of beauty, and a literary experience like none other, why, my dear, dahling reader, you're home.
Tyra has spent five years conceiving, writing, and enticing Modelland, her primero book of fiction, and you'll feel her lifelong-legged love of reading and storytelling deeply embedded in every captivating, catwalking page. Tyra has a secret vacation home in Modelland, where she is feverishly working on the next Modelland novel. But don't try to find out where it is, dahling. If you do, you may catch the Pilgrim Plague...
Tyra Banks, now a New York Times Bestselling Author, brings her imagination to fantasy novel form with the debut of Modelland, which she invested five years in conceiving and writing. The first in a series of three books, Tyra's lifelong love of reading and storytelling is deeply embedded in every page, and her commitment to empowering girls and expanding the standard definition of beauty is an ever-present theme. The book, which is for young adult readers ages 12 and up, won't disappoint.
Jump into all things Modelland—a tale inspired by Tyra's own life and laced with elements of her experiences as a supermodel, sprinkled with adventure and Tyra-isms, who's own eye is featured on the cover—a book that is sure to fulfill all your guilty pleasures.
Are you ready? Modelland is waiting for you. . .
No one gets in without being asked...and with her untamable hair, large forehead, and gangly, awkward body, Tookie De La Crème isn't expecting an invitation. Modelland, the exclusive and fantastical school on top of a mountain, never even dares to make an appearance in her dreams.
Before she can blink her mismatched eyes, something cuh-razy happens and Tookie finds herself in the very place every girl in the world obsesses about! And three unlikely girls have joined her. Thrown into a zany world that only a few are chosen to experience, Tookie glimpses a future that could be hers.
This fantasy novel, filled with fun and mysterious adventures, takes Tookie on a journey towards embracing herself, experiencing new found friendships, and courageously facing both unnerving and campy hijinks along the way.
Tookie De La Créme has untamable hair, a gawky body, and a large forehead. She wears mismatched clothes and has mismatched eyes: one green, one brown. She considers herself a Forgetta-Girl-invisible at school and a disappointment to her parents, who favor her stunning younger sister, Myrracle. Tookie has a big heart, an overactive imagination, and a talent for languages. She keeps a secret journal in which she writes her innermost thoughts in the form of letters to her friends, family, and enemies that she never mails.
Piper is a native of SansColor, where everyone has albinism. She is tall, with bright rose-colored eyes, platinum hair, and an intense expression, and is pretty much a genius. Her strict mother is the prime minister of SansColor. Piper is a loyal friend once she lets you in.
Sassy and sly, Dylan works and lives in Bou-Big-Tique Nation, the world's largest store, until a Scout sweeps her up in a pouch to join Tookie on her journey to Modelland. Dylan is "fiercely real"—six feet tall and curvy, with a heart-shaped face, lavender eyes, and thick long blond hair she wears in two ponytails. Dylan is super proud of her body... yet sometimes it brings her down. Her biggest insecurity? Her insecurity.
Four-foot-seven Shiraz loves to sing and dance. Petite and muscular, she has thick curly hair, freckles, and big eyes. Shiraz speaks very quickly in heavily accented English (her native language is Labrian), and her speedy running made her a successful messenger in her hometown before being selected for Modelland.
Zarpessa Zarionneaux has long, bone-straight auburn hair, flawless skin, and a tall, lean body. She's the girlfriend of Tookie's secret obsession, Theophilus, and she loves to make Tookie's life miserable.
Tookie's mother. Mrs. De La Créme insists that everyone call her "Creamy" even though her wrinkled face is anything but. She detests anything that isn't brand-new and is obsessed with her extensive doll collection. Her favorite is Bellissima, a lifelike baby doll. Creamy fawns over Myrracle, convinced that her beautiful younger daughter will secure a place at Modelland. She's always immaculately dressed, often in white outfits that accentuate her small waist.
The headmistress of Modelland, the BellaDonna is a fashion dictator and the final decision-maker about all candidates. And she loves to sing.
The head of Modelland security, in charge of Run-A-Way Intensive training and Thigh-High Boot Camp, Guru Gunnero is eerily handsome and beautiful at the same time. He is muscular yet slender, with blond hair slicked back in a tight ballerina bun. You do not want to get on his bad side. (Not that he has a good one...)

INDIA.ARIE: "WINGS OF FORGIVENESS"
My main character, Tookie, has been done so wrong by her mother, but even after all that Tookie has gone through, her heart is still big, and she is willing to see past all the pain her mother has caused.
DES'REE: "I'M KISSING YOU"
The sadness of this melody reminds me of how Tookie. I wrote a lot of chapters Modelland to this song.
CASSANDRA WILSON: "TIME AFTER TIME"
Cyndi Lauper will always be the queen of this song but I gotta say, Cassandra's version takes me on a wonderful journey. This song makes me think of Tookie and Lizzie's strong relationship.
ALANA DAVIS: "32 FLAVORS"
I can picture Tookie performing this song to an audience of one person: Zarpessa.
MAXWELL: "WHENEVER WHEREVER WHATEVER"
If Bravo (Tookie's love interest) could sing, he would sing this song to Tookie to show his love and appreciation.
CHUBB ROCK: "TREAT 'EM RIGHT"
I can picture the girls runway running to this song in a Run-a-Way Intensive class.
"TOO BEAUTIFUL FOR WORDS" from the Broadway musical The Color Purple
I imagine Ci~L saying the lyrics of this song to Tookie as words of encouragement.
TRENT REZNOR & ATTICUS CROSS: "HAND COVERS BRUISE," from the movie The Social Network
On the Day of Discovery there is tons of chaos around Tookie, but there is such a calmness as Ci~L reaches for Tookie's hand to take her to Modelland. This song represents the calm within the storm.
