Education: Elementary school in Canton, Missouri; Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, Iowa; B.A. in Journalism, Drake University, Des Moines

Currently lives: I live in Morehead City, North Carolina with my husband Zack Hamlett, III, who is a photographer

Previous jobs: From newspaper reporting to cutting grass

Pets: A wonderful brown, white, and black calico named Raheema, who is 12 years old

Favorite hobbies: I love to shuck and jive, but when I'm not doing that, I love to saltwater fish and grow vegetables.

Favorite foods: cantaloupes, honeydew melons, and pecan pie

Favorite clothes to wear: I love to wear my Morehead City cap, my jeans, and my hiking boots. I also love to wear African clothing as an everyday philosophical statement.

Favorite colors: red, black, and green together; also teal (greenish-blue)

Favorite books: my own, first of all, then historical fiction

Inspiration for writing: I love to tell a believable story. I love to create realistic, believable, spunky characters with flaws, who face challenges and struggle to make the best of a situation. I have always loved to read and reading inspired me to want to try to write, too.
