E. Nesbit (1858–1924) was born in London and educated in France and Germany. She began her literary career as a poet and novelist, but found her calling writing stories about children. She is the beloved author of nearly forty books, including Five Children and It, The Phoenix and the Carpet, and The Story of the Amulet.
