There Was a Little Turtle Finger Play

There was a little turtle. (Make a fist with one hand.)

He lived in a box. (Cover fist with other hand.)

He swam in a puddle. (Make swimming motions.)

He climbed on the rocks. ("Climb" the fingers of one hand on fist.)

He snapped at a mosquito. (Clap hands.)

He snapped at a flea. (Clap hands.)
He snapped at a minnow. (Clap hands.)
He snapped at me. (Clap hands and point to yourself.)
He caught the mosquito. (Bring hands together in “catching” motion.)
He caught the flea. (Bring hands together in “catching” motion.)
He caught the minnow. (Bring hands together in “catching” motion.)
But he didn't catch me! (Shake head and run away!)

Songs/Movement

I’m Being Swallowed by a Boa Constrictor

A wonderful song for dance and dramatics by Shel Silverstein (popular recording by Peter, Paul, and Mary on Peter, Paul, and Mommy).

I’m being swallowed by a boa constrictor
I’m being swallowed by a boa constrictor
I’m being swallowed by a boa constrictor
And I don’t like it very much!

Oh no, oh no, he swallowed my toe,
Oh gee, oh gee, he’s up to my knee,
Oh fiddle, oh fiddle, he’s reached my middle,
Oh heck, oh heck, he’s up to my neck,
Oh dread, oh dread, he swallowed my . . . schlirppp!

Never Smile at a Crocodile

And how about a favorite from Peter Pan? (Midi music file available from: Triplets And Us)

Never smile at a crocodile
No, you can’t get friendly with a crocodile
Don’t be taken in by his welcome grin
He’s imagining how well you’d fit within his skin
Never smile at a crocodile
Never dip your hat and stop to talk awhile
Never run, walk away, say good-night, not good-day
Clear the aisle but never smile at Mister Crocodile!

Math/Sorting

Pictures

Collect pictures of different reptiles and ask the children to sort them according to color, type, number of legs (snakes have none!), marking patterns, etc.

How Long Is a Boa Constrictor? *

Do a little research and demonstrate the different lengths of different snakes, perhaps with lengths of yarn or by making masking tape “snakes” on the floor. *The largest boa constrictor ever found was 18.5 feet long! (Source: The Smithsonian National Zoological Park)

Math/Reasoning/Game

Building Reptiles

Cut pictures of snakes into pieces. Provide construction paper or poster-board strips and glue sticks, and have the children try to “reassemble the reptiles.”

One of These Things Is Not Like the Others

Play that favorite Sesame Street game! Collect pictures of reptiles and other animals. Arrange three reptiles and one nonreptile (amphibians are particularly tricky here) on a foursquare grid. Ask the children to identify which one of these things is not like the others.

Art/Activity

Paper and Paint

Cut various sizes and shapes a bubble wrap into manageable pieces. Have the children brush or sponge brightly colored paint onto the wrap and use it to “stamp” scales on cut-outs of lizards, snakes, and turtles.
