Magic Tree House
Junie B. Jones
After her grandmother dies and Zelly’s family moves from Brooklyn to a home in Vermont, she thinks her dream of owning a dog will finally come true. No such luck; her parents are still dead set against it. But Ace, Zelly’s weird, possibly crazy grandfather, has a brilliant idea… or so he thinks. He gives Zelly an old orange juice jug and tells her it is a practice dog. She has to take care of the jug, a “dog” named O.J., like she would a real dog – complete with walking, feeding, and taking him wherever she goes so O.J. won’t be left alone. Zelly is embarrassed by the whole thing until she meets another new kid on the block and he helps her accept her weird situation. That is, until her BFF comes home from camp and laughs at her. I mean really, what is a girl supposed to do with a practice dog?
