The Golden Compass Deluxe Edition

By: Philip Pullman

BOOK TALK

In the magical fantasy world that Pullman creates, each child has an animal daemon, a companion animal spirit who is almost an extension of your soul. Lyra, a young girl who lives in London among the scholars at Jordan College, Oxford, and her daemon, Pan, stumble upon a terrible plot to kidnap children and forever sever them from their daemons. Lyra, an independent young woman, soon finds herself apprenticed and in possession of a strange device, an alethiometer, a kind of golden compass that only she can operate. It allows her to determine the truth, and in so doing, determine the future. Along the way, she discovers a secret scientific facility, is both helped and hindered by witches, and enlists the aid of an armored polar bear. She works to discover the truth about Dust and to save her world. Pullman creates an incredible world of adventure and tension.
