The Georges and the Jewels

By: Jane Smiley

BOOK TALK

Abby loves the horses her dad raises. She loves feeding them. She loves training them. She loves keeping them clean. What she doesn't love is that her dad won't let her name any of them. He's afraid she might become too attached. Instead, he names all the mares Jewel and all the geldings George. Of course Abby adds her own nicknames to help her remember them such as Black George, Blue Jewel, and Socks George. And let's not forget Ornery George - the one George who bucks Abby off every chance he gets. Between trying to teach Ornery George a thing or two and trying to stay out of the way of the bossy Big Four (Linda, Mary A., Mary N., and Joan) who have turned against her at school, Abby learns that working with horses is not that different than working with people.
