The Door in the Forest

By: Roderick Townley

Book Talk

Is being able to only tell the truth a curse or a gift? For Daniel, it seems as though it’s both. Other kids don’t want to play with him because he always tattles the truth to their teachers. When the soldiers overtake their sleepy village, Captain Sloper instantly realizes how valuable Daniel could be. He can point out the traitors and tell him where the villagers store their hidden weapons. Captain Sloper is determined to find out everything he can about the townspeople and will stop at nothing, even if it means killing children, to find what he is looking for. The one thing Daniel really doesn’t want to tell him about, though, is the magical island that can be seen in the distance. Impenetrable to everyone, it isn’t until Daniel meets Emily, granddaughter of Mrs. Byrdsong, that he comes to understand the importance of Here and his gift of truth-telling. Together, they learn the secrets of the island and hope its occupants can help them find a way to get rid of the dangerous soldiers once and for all.
