Teenage Waistland

By: Lynn Biederman and Lisa Pazer

Book Talk

It’s difficult enough being a teenager, let alone if you’re morbidly obese. Four teens who fit the bill decide to get their lives back by participating in a clinical trial for teen Lap Band surgery. All-star football player, Bobby, is willing to sacrifice his football career and his dad’s respect if it means getting rid of his moobies (male boobs). Rich, but unhappy, Marcie hopes losing weight will help her reconnect with her now skinny best friend. Inseparable since elementary school, Char and East, are tired of being the fat girls, and can’t stomach one more diet. When accepted in the trial each teen must commit to making weekly group therapy sessions and keeping a food diary. In alternating chapters we learn from the group that having surgery and losing weight might be easier than revealing the secrets that could release them from their real Teenage Waistland.
