Sammy Keyes and the Power of Justice Jack

By: Wendelin Van Draanen

BOOK TALK

Sammy just can’t get away from crime.  It finds her like a mosquito finds the one place you didn’t spray.  First, the very large muumuu-wearing Mrs. Wedgewood, her grandmother’s neighbor, has disappeared and taken quite a bit of cash the tenants gave her for “investments.”  Did she just take the money and run, or is there something more sinister in her disappearance?  Also, enter Justice Jack—a wannabe superhero who dresses in outrageous costumes, lives in a trailer painted Pepto Bismol pink, and drives a dirt bike with a sidecar, which he calls The High Roller.  The problem?  Although Justice Jack says he lives to fight crime, crime seems to occur only when he’s around.  Is he setting up the criminal activity, or is he just in the right place at the right time?  Sammy is drawn in before she even knows what hits her.  With a little sneaking around, the help of her friends, and a few, um, somewhat questionable tactics, Sammy will do her best to solve both crimes—before Justice Jack can utter “It’s a good world.  Let’s take it back!”
