Rump: The True Story of Rumpelstiltskin

By: Liesl Shurtliff

BOOK TALK

Have you ever wondered where Rumpelstiltskin came from? Or who his parents were? Or how he acquired the magic to turn straw into gold? Rump’s story begins when he is living with his grandmother who raises him after his parents die.  All he remembers about his mother is her whispering his name to him.  But all he hears if half his name – Rump.  He is teased and bullied and made to feel that he has no destiny because he has half a name.  After his grandmother dies, Rump leaves his mountain village to discover who he is and to solve the mystery of his name.  In his travels he makes friends with trolls, finds his mother’s family, and discovers why he can spin straw into gold.  Hopefully, what he learns will enable him to let the queen keep her firstborn son, escape from the curse of his magic that enables him to spin straw into gold, and free him to live a life with his best friend, Red.
