Magic Tree House
Junie B. Jones
Sixteen-year-old Hild has the gift of being far-minded; she can see things before they happen which is why she killed the man who was going to stab her cousin, the king’s son. However, instead of being grateful, the king unjustly accuses her of being a murderer and banishes from her home. As part of her punishment, she is given to the king of a neighboring tribe. Her uncle sends guards with her and her soon-to-be kinsmen, and together they travel to the land of the Geats. Along the way, they encounter a monster who lives in the fens, and once again Hild kills, this time saving her traveling companions and earning their respect. Upon arrival at the king’s hall, Hild and her guards realize she cannot stay in such a horrible place. The chief guard, Mord, plans an escape, but Hild feels bound by honor to stay and marry the King of the Geats. Her desire is to return home to the people she loves, but will her honor allow her to make the choice for freedom?
