Magic Tree House
Junie B. Jones
Martha and her brother Tug have a perfect life until their mother dies and their father starts acting strange. Soon after the funeral, their father quits his job and they have to move into a smaller house. Martha hears her father leave the house late at night and return early in the mornings. She and Tug watch his strange behavior as he becomes more erratic and weird. When Martha plans a dinner party for her friends, one of them asks her how long her father has been an alcoholic. Martha doesn’t understand, but she begins to search the house for liquor bottles and finds six. When she questions her father, he lies and becomes angry. This is the beginning of the end of their life as they knew it for Martha and Tug because the situation goes from bad to worse and social services soon steps in.
