Johnny Swanson

By: Eleanor Updale

Book Talk

Bullied by his classmates, Johnny falls for an advertisement that promises to help him—but it ends up being a scam.  When his family’s greedy landlord raises their rent and threatens eviction, the enterprising Johnny sets up his own hilarious--but false--ads to bring in extra money.  His mother cleans houses and does laundry, but when one of her best customers, Dr. Langford and his wife disappear, the plot thickens.  A tuberculosis scare and the shocking arrest of his mother for murder leave Johnny no options but to try save her.  The love of money and the desire for more of it lead to murder, lies, and a delightful read.
