How Tia Lola Saved the Summer

By: Julia Alvarez

Book Talk

Miguel is so not looking forward to the summer.  How can he when his mother’s friend, Victor, and his three daughters are coming to stay for a whole week--the week of the big game?  Then Tía Lola comes up with this idea to make the week a summer camp and Miguel decides it might not be too bad; treasure hunts in the dark, campfires, barbeques, trips to town, swimming, and magic swords.  But Miguel sprains his ankle at the first practice and can’t play baseball.  Essie, the girl who is Miguel’s age, happens to be a great ball player and she takes his place. Yep, it’s going to be a horrible week… or is it?
