Aces Up

By: Lauren Barnholdt

BOOK TALK

Thirty thousand dollars. That’s the only thing stopping math-wiz Shannon Card from being excited about her early acceptance to Wellesley College. Since her dad’s lost his job, she’s determined to find one to make a lot of quick cash. Armed with a fake ID and a too tight black dress, Shannon starts cocktail waitressing at the local casino. A wicked boss, ditzy coworker and killer heals soon begin to shatter Shannon’s dreams of big money. And it doesn’t help that she’s got to keep up her grades in AP classes while juggling a complicated relationship with her rival, Parvati, who’s dating her ex-bestfriend Max. A mysterious meeting with Cole, a member of the top secret poker playing group Aces Up, seems to change her luck. Despite never gambling, Shannon’s math skills make her a wiz poker player and soon she’s pocketing hundreds of dollars each night. But when Cole ups the stakes, Shannon has to decide if cheating is in her cards.
