Magic Tree House
Junie B. Jones
Ani and her mother sell sardines for a living while her father is off fighting in the Spanish Civil War. Her mother is distant and harsh and Ani has no friends since the kids at school make fun of her fishy smell that never seems to go away. Used to being alone, she’s wary of the new boy who seems to want to be her friend. Mathias is convinced that his father is a spy and Ani soon finds herself helping him deliver messages to other members of the spy network. Germany is gaining power and the fear of a Nazi invasion becomes real when their small little town is bombed and Ani and Mathias’s lives are changed forever. How can one insignificant person make a difference in the world? When her world falls apart around her, Ani finds strength and purpose she didn’t know she had.
