When Meggie’s
father announces that the family will be leaving their home in New
Y or k so that he can help the war effort by working in a factory
in Willow Run, Michigan, she isn’t sure what to think. Even though
she loves her Grandpa, his heavy German accent embarrasses her,
and she’s secretly glad he won’t be joining them. She’s tired of
people accusing him of being a Nazi and hopes that by moving to
a new state, she can put all of that behind her. Plus, if her brother
Eddie comes home from the war, he’ll need someone to tell him where
his parents and sister are, so Grandpa staying behind seems like
the perfect solution. What Meggie hadn’t counted on, however, is
that the war seems to be going on forever and the ache in her heart
from missing her Grandpa isn’t letting up. Can she make it until
the end of the war, or will she find her own way back to New York?
