For
the second time, the boy is going to live with his grandmother.
The first time, he helped her cook for a group of men building a
war road. This time, though, he is going to live with his grandmother
because his father is fighting in the war and his mother can't take
care of him while working at the munitions factory. The boy's cousin,
Kristina, is expecting a baby, so the boy, his grandmother, and
several other women go to Kristina's farm to help prepare for the
birth of the baby and to help out with some farm chores. During
Kristina's labor, the women bring out the family quilt , which chronicles
the lives of the sons, daughters, fathers, and mothers that have
died. As he listens to each woman tell their story, the boy learns
not only about the loved ones who have passed, but about himself
as well.
