Talk about your bad luck.
Orphans Sallie and Maude are shopping with their Aunt Ruthie at
the local mercantile when a stray bullet from some cowboys messing
around hits Aunt Ruthie and kills her immediately. Sallie and Maude
don’t want to be at the mercy of the local reverend and his wife,
who want the girls to be their own private babysitters. So they
“borrow” a couple of horses, dress up like boys, and head west,
hoping to find Aunt Ruthie’s long-lost brother, Arlen. It isn’t
long before the man who accidentally shot Ruthie catches up to them
and goes along for the ride. Unsure of what to make of him, the
girls let him join, realizing it will be easier to pass as boys
if they have an older man with them. One catastrophe after another
occurs, leaving the girls to wonder if they’ll ever make it to Missouri
in one piece.
