For Steven
Thomas, winning a writing contest that lands him right in the middle
of the men’s Final Four basketball tournament is a dream come true.
What he’s not excited about, however, is the other winner in the
contest—Susan Carol Anderson . The two eighth graders are given
press passes and allowed to attend practices and interviews that
the general public is barred from. While at the Superdome watching
the players warm up, Susan and Steven overhear a conversation between
a man in a suit and Minnesota State ’s star player, Chip Graber.
From what the kids can tell, the man in the suit tells Chip he’d
better throw the game, otherwise his coach, who is also his father,
will be out of a job. Realizing Chip is being blackmailed, the two
come up with a plan to help him. Once they gain Chip’s trust, however,
they quickly realize that the motives behind the blackmailer are
more complicated than they had anticipated. Will they be able to
expose the truth before the final game, or will their involvement
with Chip cost them their lives?
