More than
anything, Fleur Bell wants to replace their old, broken-down robot,
Grumps, with one of the new, sleek BDC4 robots her best friend Marcia
just received. This robot is so advanced that LifeCorp, the company
selling them, advertises them as “robots by name, friends by nature.”
Instead, her father gets them a strange-looking robot that is a
prototype called EGR3. Nicknamed Eager by the Bell family, they
notice that he, too, is different from most robots because he seems
almost human—displaying emotions, asking questions, and learns from
his experiences. Even though Fleur is impressed with Marcia's robot,
she can't help but feel that there is something wrong with it, something
she just can't put her finger on. When Marcia calls Fleur one day
in a panic telling her that BDC4 has taken her family hostage, Fleur
realizes that not only Marcia's computer has gone haywire, but all
of the BCD4's in their city have, too. Thinking that LifeCorp might
be behind the attacking robots, Fleur, her brother, Eager, and Marcia
try must find out the real reason the robots are behaving the way
they are, otherwise their city will be overtaken.
