THE
LIGHTKEEPER'S DAUGHTER
Iain Lawrence
Hardcover Delacorte Books for Young Readers | September 2002
| $16.95 | 0-385-72925-1 | Ages 12 up
|
Squid was raised in isolation from the world on
a remote island with only her parents and brother. Her father, the
lightkeeper, taught them what they needed to know. It was a happy
time. Then, when Squid was thirteen, a man kayaked to the shore
of their island and Squid fell in love. Soon after, her older brother,
her only friend, died. Things happened so fast that she decided
to leave the island, never to return.
But things happen and she does return—
four years later with her small daughter to make peace with her
family and try to make sense out of a bizarre childhood that left
her empty inside. As she tries to deal with her anger toward her
parents for the death of her brother, she finds his diaries. Reading
them, she begins to see things with a new perspective. What does
she discover about her brother in those diaries? And will she reveal
what she learns to her parents?
