GIRLS UNDER PRESSURE
Jacqueline Wilson
Hardcover Delacorte Books for Young Readers | June 2002 | $9.95 | 0-385-72975-8 | Ages 12 up

If you have a best friend, then you know you couldn’t live without her —though sometimes you’d like to try. Nadine, Magda, and Ellie, are best friends, who often get on each other’s nerves and hurt each other’s feelings. But they stick together like best friends should.

Both Nadine and Magda are thin and model-perfect and Ellie wants desperately to be like them. So, much to the surprise of her family and friends, she begins to diet and exercise. However, as the weight drops, Ellie’s personality begins to change and her friends become concerned for her. But the other girls have problems of their own: Magda’s boyfriend tries to take advantage of her, and push her into a sexual relationship, lying about what they do and don’t do. While Nadine goes to a modeling agency to get pictures for a portfolio from a very shady character.

Through it all, friends they are and friends they will remain.
