After losing his parents
to the plague and burning his family home, Mateo signs on as a cabin
boy to travel around the world with Ferdinand Magellan. Mateo becomes
a favorite of Magellan because he can sing and play the guitar,
but his position does not allow him to be spared any of the backbreaking
work that his job as cabin boy entails. Many of the crew members
think Magellan is going crazy because he insists on looking for
the Spice Islands in the Far East using a western route, but Magellan
refuses to turn back even though many men lose their lives and two
of the other ships on the voyage with them are lost in a storm.
Mateo
must make many choices during his voyage. Will he take the opportunity
to mutiny with the other crew members or will he remain loyal to
his captain? Will he be killed for striking an officer while trying
to protect his first love? Will he die in the raging storm by being
swept over the ship and drowned? Will he be loyal to his mate when
he is caught spying?
