One day
you are a pair of ordinary American teenagers, a brother and sister
who happen to be twins, and the next you are being heralded as the
“twins of legend” with immense powers that, once “awakened,” can
be use for great good works or dastardly evil ends. In this fast-paced
sequel to The
Alchemyst, 15-year-olds Sophie and Josh have been whisked
by a magical portal from San Francisco to Paris with their traveling
companions, the 14th century alchemist Nicholas Flamel and the enigmatic,
centuries-old warrior Scathach. Sophie’s magical powers are newly
awakened, and so are her brother’s feelings of jealousy and inadequacy
when she becomes a major force in saving the travelers from traps
set for them by Dr. John Dee, Flamel’s arch-enemy, and his accomplice,
the conniving and powerful Macchiavelli. Meanwhile, Flamel’s sorceress
wife, Perenelle, has been imprisoned by their enemies on Alcatraz
Island, and she struggles to outwit a constantly expanding cast
of mythical creatures. Can Flamel, Scatty, and the twins keep themselves
out of the clutches of Valkyries, ancient monsters, and the local
police in Paris while Perenelle finds a way to escape and join them?
Can Josh withstand the temptation to be “awakened” in a way that
may prove harmful to their cause? Who is the dark master
that Dee is serving, and how can he be stopped from his plan of
destruction? The Magician delivers breathless excitement
and leaves you longing for the next installment in the The
Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel.
