Twelve-year-old
Madison is an uncomplicated girl with simple desires. She just wants
to play baseball. Today, that wouldn’t be a big deal, but in 1980,
there weren’t as many opportunities for girls . . . especially in
small towns. Since there is no girl’s team, she must play with the
boys. At first they scoff at her non-girlie ways, but when she starts
scooping up grounders, throwing like a (gulp!) boy, and batting
out of the field, they swallow their pride and realize that, with
her help, they just might win the championship! Misunderstandings
abound as she deals with broken friendships, her first boyfriend,
and her new celebrity status. Madison spends her summer trying to
figure out where the tomboy in her ends and the girl begins. A warm-hearted
story with exciting baseball play-by-plays not usually found in
a “chick lit” book.
