Welcome
to the Preschool Book Nook, an informative place invoking
those book-filled, cozy corners in classrooms and
libraries.
The
start of the new year is the perfect time to teach
young readers about the seasons. Make 2008 a kitten
year by introducing A
Kitten Tale, the newest gem by Caldecott
Medal winner Eric Rohmann.

In A Kitten Tale three of the four kittens
are wary about seeing their first snow. The fourth
kitten is excited. Which kittens do your students
relate to? Ask them why three of the kittens are worried.
Have do they feel when they experience something new,
such as the first day of school?
Explain to students that a tale is a story of a real
or imaginary event. What other animals could have
appeared in Eric Rohmann’s seasonal tale? What would
the book’s title be if it starred different animals?
Make a class list of birthdays arranged by season.
Create a bulletin board for each season, and have
students post their pictures on the appropriate board
based on their birthdays.
Click
here to download the A Story for All Seasons
activity sheet for your class. Have students
draw their favorite parts of each of the four seasons.
Give them suggestions like favorite things to eat,
favorite games to play, or favorite holidays.
‘Tis the season for a classroom full of crafts! Click
here for directions on making muffin cup flowers,
stuffed fall pumpkins, and cotton ball snowmen!
And
the first reviews are in for A Kitten Tale !

"A winner for a winter storytime, this
is as amusing as watching real kittens romp."—

*"While
this title has broad appeal, it is an especially apt
choice for children who approach the unknown with
fear rather than pleasure."— Publishers Weekly,
