It's
an Intergenerational Thing
Welcome to
the Preschool Book Nook, an informative place invoking
those book-filled, cozy corners in classrooms and
libraries.
There
are so many benefits when kids spend time with the
adults in their lives. No matter if it's mothers and
fathers with daughters and sons, grandparents with
grandkids, a teacher with her students, or children
visiting an elderly neighbor, there's always something
to be learned when generations spend time together
and share in new experiences. Here are some books
and ideas to share with your class.
In
You're
Lovable to Me, Mama Bunny reassures her children
that she will always love them: "No matter what
your feelings are, whatever they may be . . . I'm
your mama. You're my bunnies. And you're lovable to
me." Discuss with your class the concept of unconditional
love, as in the special bond between a parent and
child: of when you love someone with all your heart
and would do anything to make them happy. Have the
class think of ways they would show their love to
a special adult in their lives.
You're
Lovable to Me also shows how one is never
too grown up to hear someone say, "I love you."
Your students can create special "I Love You"
pendants to give to an adult they love and admire
- a parent, grandparent, or elderly neighbor. The
class can create a gold heart pendant (like the one
Mama Bunny wears) with construction paper and ribbon.
Stitchin'
and Pullin'and Song
and Dance Man talk about people of all ages
sharing and passing along traditions - whether it's
quilting or learning a new song and dance. Have your
class talk about the traditions they've learned from
family members. Using colorful construction paper
as "patches," each child can draw a scene
of their family tradition; place and tape the patches
on a classroom wall to create your own group quilt.
