You will need:

  • Crayons
  • Thick paper
  • Toothpick
  • Tempera, poster paint, or water color paint (optional)
  • Thick paintbrush (optional)

1. Draw thick bands with different colored crayons on a sheet of paper. Press down hard with the crayons.

2. Paint over the bands of crayons with thick black poster paint until the bands of crayon are completely covered. Let paint dry. (You can also use a black crayon instead of paint for similar results.)

3. Using a toothpick, scratch a picture through the paint or black crayon. The colors underneath will show through.

To make another kind of wax picture, cover the paper with a light-colored crayon. Then cover the light color with a darker one. When you scratch out a picture, the lighter color will show through.

If you've got a green thumb, try scratching out some pretty flowers. You can draw a whole many colored garden!
