The Girl Who Chased the Moon: Now a New York Times Bestseller

Friday, March 26th, 2010

MOONEmily Benedict came to Mullaby, North Carolina, hoping to solve at least some of the riddles surrounding her mother’s life. Such as, why did Dulcie Shelby leave her hometown so suddenly? And why did she vow never to return? But the moment Emily enters the house where her mother grew up and meets the grandfather she never knew—a reclusive, real-life gentle giant—she realizes that mysteries aren’t solved in Mullaby, they’re a way of life: Here are rooms where the wallpaper changes to suit your mood. Unexplained lights skip across the yard at midnight. And a neighbor bakes hope in the form of cakes.

Have you read STAYING TRUE by Jenny Sanford?

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

staying trueIn this candid and compelling memoir—now a New York Times bestseller—the first lady of South Carolina reveals the private ordeal behind her very public betrayal, and offers inspiration for anyone struggling to keep faith during life’s most trying times.

Below are some discussions questions to ponder. Let us know what you think!

1.) Many people feel that memoir is such a compelling genre because real life is sometimes stranger than fiction. Were you interested in Jenny Sanford’s memoir because of the well-publicized real-life events it chronicles? Did the book satisfy your hope for details about how she dealt with this difficult time in her life?

2.) Staying True chronicles the long-span of the Sanford marriage – more than twenty years from the day they met – yet Jenny Sanford chose to begin and end the book with events from the summer of 2009. Do you feel this drew you into the story? Kept you in suspense? Or dealt up front with what many people already knew about Mrs. Sanford?  How did the author’s story-telling decisions affect your reading experience?

OUTCASTS UNITED chosen as One Maryland One Book 2010 selection!

Monday, March 1st, 2010

OUTCASTS UNITED: An American Town, a Refugee Team, and One Woman's Quest to Make a Difference --by Warren St. JohnOUTCASTS UNITED by Warren St. John is a rich and inspiring story about refugees, soccer, and one amazing woman who holds a team and a community together in the face of daunting challenges.  It is no surprise then that the Maryland Humanities Council chose it as the 2010 selection for its One Maryland One Book program. Among other things, the program brings people together “through the shared experience of reading the same book and participating in book-centered discussions” (sort of  like one huge, state-wide book club!). Whether it’s with your neighbors and community members or your friends and book club members, OUTCASTS UNITED is a book that should be shared and discussed.
