GERONIMO
by Alex Porter Clark
Hi, I am Geronimo. I am a pony. I'm a Pinto pony. I'm brown and white. I am probably twelve hands high. I live at Sagpond Farm. It is a riding school. It is big. In the Summer it is so crowded that they have to make a third outside ring!
There is a girl who rides me every Saturday at 3:00PM. She wears these close-fitting pants called jodhpurs. Her name is Alex Porter Clark. She brings me carrots sometimes. I like her because she never uses the whip too hard. Alex is never mean to me, even though she can be a little bossy.
Once, I sidestepped and that was because some kids were roller-skating and they were noisy and startled me. So she was surprised when I sidestepped and she fell off. I was scared when she thudded to the ground and I cantered away. One of the grooms ran after me and caught me.
I was not the only one who sidestepped. Lots of other horses and ponies sidestepped and threw their riders, too. A lot of people were okay and got back on their horses.
Alex walked to cool me out, and then she put me in my stall.
THE END
"Not since The Velveteen Rabbit has there been such an emotionally gripping story of animal-human friendship."
