Open to legal residents of the U.S. (excluding Florida, New York, and Rhode Island) who are 18 years of age or older as of May 5, 2009. Sweepstakes ends July 31st, 2009. All members of the Grand Prize Winner’s book club (“guests”) must meet eligibility requirements in order to redeem prize.

To enter, go to the Web page for this Sweepstakes, located on this web site at www.takeyourbookclubtoguernsey.com,andenter your complete name, address, and email address as directed.  Limit: one entry per person and/or email address per day.  Entries must be received between 12:00 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time on May 5, 2009 and 11:59 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time on July 31, 2009.  Only entries submitted electronically to theWeb sitein accordance with these rules will be eligible for consideration.  Entries will be deemed to have been submitted by the authorized account holder of the e-mail address submitted at the time of the entry.  “Authorized account holder” is defined as the natural person who is assigned to an e-mail address by an Internet access provider, online service provider or organization (e.g., business, educational institution, etc.) that is responsible for assigning e-mail addresses for the domain associated with the submitted e-mail address.  Sweepstakes is open to all legal residents of the United States (excluding New York, Florida, and Rhode Island) who are at least 18 years of age on May 5, 2009.  Employees of Random House, Inc. and Visit Guernsey, Inc. (collectively “Sponsors”) their respective parents, subsidiaries, and affiliated companies, their advertising and promotional agencies, and the immediate families of the aforesaid, are not eligible to enter or win.  

Sponsors are not responsible for lost/late/misdirected entries or computer malfunctions. Entrants may be automatically enrolled in the Random House Readers Circle email programs, and submission of entry constitutes permission for use entrant’s email address and other submitted information for this purpose.  No purchase is necessary for this enrollment, which may be canceled by entrant at any time).

SELECTION OF WINNERS:

From all eligible entries received, one (1) Grand Prize Winner and ten (10) First Prize Winners will be selected in a random conducted by Random House on or about August 14th, 2009. Odds of winning depend upon the number of eligible entries received. 

PRIZES:

One (1) Grand Prize – A 4-day/3-night trip for six (6) to Guernsey, UK. Trip consists of round-trip Economy class air transportation (U.S. airport departure to Heathrow, Gatwick departure to Guernsey; returning Guernsey to Gatwick, Heathrow to U.S. airport), 3 nights’ hotel accommodations (single or double occupancy at discretion of Sponsors), one (1) three-course dinner in conjunction with a winning book club from the UK, an island tour, and a joint book club discussion of the novel while on island (Approximate Retail Value of the Grand Prize, including travel, accommodations, tour, and dinner - $5,100 per person. Actual retail value will depend on point of departure from the United States.) 

Ten (10) First Prizes – Ten copies of THE GUERNSEY LITERARY AND POTATO PEEL PIE SOCIETY ($140 retail value) will be awarded to each of ten first prize winners.    

RESTRICTIONS.  The following terms and conditions apply to all travel prizes awarded:  Trip may not be combined with any other offer and travel may not qualify for frequent flyer miles. Winner and guests must travel together from (and return to) Winner’s point of origin.  Departure for the trip is October 2, 2009, and return is October 5, 2009; no substitution of dates.  Seat selection subject to availability.  Travel must originate and terminate in the city nearest the Winner’s city of residence providing direct service to London.  Direct service is travel on a published routing between two points and any connection must be a standard connection for that route.  Stopovers are not permitted. All other expenses and costs not expressly listed above, including but not limited to taxes, tips, ground transportation between Heathrow Airport and Gatwick Airport, other ground transportation, meals, room service, spa services, entertainment, transfers, transportation between airport and residence of winner and guests, and all other personal and incidental expenses, will be the travelers’ sole responsibility. No refunds or credit for changes are allowed.  All taxes (federal, state and local), fees and surcharges on prizes are the sole responsibility of winner and/or guests. Travel and use of accommodation are at risk of travelers, and Sponsors assume no liability.  All insurance and any applicable airport charges including excess baggage charges and airport taxes will the sole responsibility of the travelers. 

General Release.  BY ACCEPTING THE PRIZE, THE GRAND PRIZE WINNER, FIRST PRIZE WINNERS, AND GRAND PRIZE WINNER’S GUESTS AGREE THAT THE SPONSORS, THEIR SUBSIDIARIES, AFFILIATES, ADVERTISING AND PROMOTION AGEGNCIES, AND ALL OF SPONSORS’ OFFICERS, DIRECTORS, EMPLOYEES, REPRESENTATIVES AND AGENTS, WILL HAVE NO LABILITY WHATSOEVER FOR, AND WILL BE HELD HARMLESS BY WINNERS AGAINST ANY LIABILITY FOR, ANY INJURY (INCLUDING DEATH OR DISMEMBERMENT), LOSS OR DAMAGES OF ANY KIND TO PERSONS AND PROPERTY WHETHER SUCH INJURY, LOSS OR DAMAGES ARE DUE IN WHOLE OR IN PART, DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY, FROM THE ACCEPTANCE, POSSESSION, USE OR MISUSE OF THE PRIZE OR PARTICIPATION IN THIS SWEEPSTAKES OR PARTICIPATION IN ANY SWEEPSTAKES OR PRIZE-RELATED ACTIVITY, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION ANY ACTIVITY UNDERTAKEN IN OR EN ROUTE TO GUERNSEY. 

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE:

Open to legal residents of the U.S., who are 18 years of age or older as of May 5, 2009. Employees of Random House, Inc. and VisitGuernsey, including their respective parents, subsidiaries, affiliates, and agencies, as well as immediate family members of  and persons living in the same household as such employees are not eligible. Void in Florida, New York, Rhode Island, and where prohibited.  All guests of Grand Prize Winner must meet all eligibility requirements.

GENERAL CONDITIONS:

Taxes will be the responsibility of the Winners. Grand Prize Winner will be required to execute an Affidavit/Publicity/Liability Release within 14 days of attempted notification or prize will be forfeited and an alternate Winner selected. Grand Prize Winner’s guests/traveling companions must be 18 years of age or older and must execute a Liability Release within the same time period. Noncompliance with any condition will result in disqualification and selection of an alternate Winner. Grand Prize Winner and guests will be responsible for securing passports, photo I.D., proof of citizenship or other travel documents required for international travel. Grand Prize Winner will be notified by e-mail on or about August 17, 2009 and First Prize Winners will be notified by e-mail on or about August 24th, 2009. No transfer/cash substitution of prize permitted. Sponsors reserve the right to post, remove and/or modify this sweepstakes on the Internet at any time. Sponsors reserve the right to disqualify entries from anyone tampering with the Internet entry process. If, for any reason, the sweepstakes or any drawing is not capable of running as planned by reason of damage by computer virus, worms, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, technical limitations or failures, or any other causes which,

in the sole opinion of the Sponsors, could compromise, undermine or otherwise affect the Official Rules, administration, security, fairness or proper conduct of the sweepstakes,

the Sponsors reserve the right and absolute discretion to modify these Official Rules and/or to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the sweepstakes. In the event of termination or cancellation, the Winners will be selected from all eligible entries received before termination. Sponsors assume no responsibility for any error, omission, interruption, deletion, defect, delay in operation or transmission, communications line failure, theft, destruction, or unauthorized access to the site. Sponsors are not responsible for injury or damage to any computer, other equipment, or person relating to or resulting from participation in the sweepstakes, or from downloading materials or accessing the site. Sweepstakes is subject to applicable laws and regulations in U.S. Participants release the Sponsors, their parent companies, affiliates, agencies, employees, officers, directors, successors and assigns from any liability and/or loss resulting from participation in sweepstakes or acceptance or use of any prize. By their entry, participants fully and unconditionally agree to these rules and judges decisions, which are final and binding. By acceptance of prize, Winners agree to these rules and to Sponsors’ use of their name/likeness for commercial purposes without notification/compensation, except where prohibited by law.
