The Mary Ann Shaffer Memorial Fund

To celebrate Guernsey author Mary Ann Shaffer’s life-long commitment to writing, her family created the Mary Ann Shaffer Memorial Fund, which provided a scholarship at Soapstone, the Writing Retreat for Women, for an unpublished writer who has shown a serious commitment to writing. Soapstone offers women writers a stretch of uninterrupted time for their work and the opportunity to live in semi-solitude close to the natural world. Soapstone also provides the validation and encouragement necessary to embark upon or sustain a long or difficult writing project.

If you would like to send a donation to Soapstone in memory of Mary Ann Shaffer, please mail your check to:

    Soapstone, Inc.
    622 S.E. 29th Avenue
    Portland, OR 97214

Designate “In memory of Mary Ann Shaffer” on your check.

Donate online through Network for Good. In the “Designation” line, enter “In memory of Mary Ann Shaffer.”

I very much need to contact Annie Barrows. My family is from Guernsey (on my mother’s side) & a family ‘treasure ‘ I have is a diary kept by my Grandfather’s brother during the Nazi occupation !! We call it “The Guernsey Diary” I have copies, please allow me to tell her about this. Thanks – Robert

    2. Stacy Kilroy says:

I came to this website to write a thank you note to Ms. Shaffer and Ms. Barrows. I haven’t been able to read a book for the last few years. The reason isn’t worth a pinch of salt and probabley best described as somewhat self inflicted.
Something led me to this book. A weight has lifted from my mind. I appreciate it and hope Ms. Barrows knows how grateful I am.
