Take a peek at the Ballantine Books Mystery page where we feature new mystery releases each month.

Take a look at the brand new MORTALIS website.

Dear Readers,

As I write this, the mercury level has climbed into the 90s and it feels like the majority of Manhattanites are elsewhere — at the Hamptons, at the shore, or just positioned beside the nearest pool. But that means that right now is a perfect time for beach reading, and our top suggestions are below.

First, though, a quick report on ThrillerFest, which took place here in New York City last month. In just a few short years, the International Thriller Writers Organization has become one of the largest, most vibrant, and most influential groups of writers on the planet, and that was very much in evidence at their latest convention. Hundreds of authors, editors, agents, reviewers, and readers gathered at Midtown's Grand Hyatt for four days of panels and receptions, and it was all topped off by a classy awards ceremony held at Cipriani on 42nd Street. And I'm very happy to say that two authors we publish were among those either nominated for or receiving an award.

First, author Steven M. Thomas was nominated for best first novel for his comic crime debut about honorable thief Robert Rivers, CRIMINAL PARADISE. Though Steven didn't take the award, it was wonderful to see the novel — and its highly likable author — get some public and much deserved recognition.

And to conclude the evening, David Morrell was given the ThrillerMaster Award, in recognition of his vast body of work and influence in the field of literature. We are re-introducing David's classic Brotherhood of the Rose Trilogy (THE BROTHERHOOD OF THE ROSE, THE FRATERNITY OF THE STONE, and THE LEAGUE OF NIGHT AND FOG) as Mortalis trade paperbacks, and it was very nice to see him recognized for his novels and the great effect his career has had on commercial publishing.

But the season is almost over, so I'll let you go to fit in your last summer books.

Happy reading,

Mark
