About Random House and SharedBook

  1. Who produces the personalized books?
    1. The Personalized Random House books are produced as a result of a relationship between Random House and SharedBook.
  2. SharedBook Overview
    1. SharedBook has created a publishing platform which allows customers to personalize books. Using this technology, customers may upload photos, add dedications and personalize many Random House titles. Each book is then printed on demand and shipped to the customer.

Customer Experience: Creating the Personalized Book

  1. What are the PC requirements for personalizing a book?
    1. A PC or Mac with Firefox or Internet Explorer 5.5 (or higher) is required. The customer will also need Adobe Acrobat Reader (which is a free download) in order to preview their book. Unfortunately, SharedBook technology does not work with the Safari browser at this time.
  2. How does the customer personalize their book?
    1. On the book product detail page, the customer clicks on the "Personalize Me" button. On the next page, the customer can upload a digital photo (optional) by clicking on the "Browse" button. Next, the customer selects a photo from their hard drive via the pop up dialog box. Next, the customer enters a dedication into the Dedication text box. Please note that dedications are limited to 350 characters (spaces included). If a customer does not know what to write, they can click on the "Try these suggestions" link under the text box. Once the customer has written their dedication, they can click on the "Preview Your Book" button to see their personalized book.
  3. Can the customer save their work and place the order later?
    1. No, customers cannot save their work and come back to it later. The customer may upload a photo and enter text to preview their work, but if they do not hit "Buy" then they will have to enter the data again when they are ready to complete their purchase.
  4. Can the customer review the dedication page before they place their order?
    1. Yes. After they've uploaded their picture (optional) and entered in the dedication, they can click on the "Preview Your Book" button to review their personalized book.
  5. The customer tried to preview their book but it didn't work. What do they do?
    1. First, the customer should make sure that they have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed; they will need this program to view their preview. Second, the customer should make sure that they are not blocking pop ups. The preview will display in a pop-up window separate from the current browser window.
    2. To turn off pop-up blocking in IE, please follow these steps:
      1. Click on "Tools" in the very top navigation bar of the browser window
      2. Select "Internet Options" from the drop down menu
      3. Click on the "Privacy" tab in the Internet Options window
      4. Un-check the box next to "Block pop-ups"
      5. Please remember that this will not only allow pop-ups on this site but may also allow pop-up windows on other sites. To prevent that from happening, restore the original privacy settings before navigating to another website.
  6. What type of picture files can the customer use?
    1. SharedBook only accepts JPEG uploads at this time.
  7. What size JPEG can the customer use?
    1. The system limitation is 5MB for the total file size. The minimum pixel dimension we recommend is at least 450 pixels in each direction. Less than this will cause a warning however the application will print whatever the customer wishes.
  8. How big will the picture be?
    1. The "area" on the dedication page is roughly 3 inches wide by 2 inches high. Please note that not all images will fill the entire area; for example, a portrait image will be much narrower and there may be white space on either side of the image.
  9. Will JPEG files be resized to fit onto the photo area of the dedication page?
    1. The application will retain the height to width ratio of the original image and fit it within the allocated space. It will not crop the photo in any way.

Delivery Times and Fees

  1. How long will it take to receive the personalized book once an order is placed?
    1. The book will be delivered in 10 - 14 business days.
  2. Do you offer expedited shipping?
    1. We offer expedited shipping to our U.S. customers for an additional fee. The customer may select from UPS 1-day Overnight, UPS 2-day or UPS Ground.
  3. Do you ship internationally?
    1. If the book is available for Canada and/or international sales, then we will ship the personalized book internationally.
  4. Do you ship to PO Boxes?
    1. No, we do not ship to PO Boxes at this time.

Customer Service

  1. How does a customer contact SharedBook?
    1. Customers can call our Customer Service department at 888-212-3121 and speak to one of our representatives. Our office hours are 8 AM - 10 PM (Eastern) Monday through Friday and during the Holiday Season, on Saturday from 10 AM until 5 PM.

  2. Can a customer make a change to their order once it's been placed?
    1. No. Once an order has been placed it cannot be changed so customers should be sure to review their Book Preview and Order Preview carefully before submitting their order.
