February 24, 2006 Pamela Mullin’s report from the first day of Comic Con: Friday, Opening Day I arrived at the Javits center this morning with Katie and another Pantheon staff member carrying extremely heavy boxes filled with our new graphic novel catalog. I had worried that these catalogs weren’t going to make it to our office in time, but the amazing printing crew and our persistent advertising director came through for us, and they look fantastic. After we dropped off the boxes, I met my booth mates, set up the Pantheon table, and prepared for the doors to open to the industry at noon. At 4pm they opened the doors to the general public and Katie arrived with dinner. Throughout the day we had several interesting folks stop by the booth. I was approached by many librarians, all of whom commented on how highly they think of Persepolis and are looking for more from Marjane Satrapi. I also finally got to put a face to many members of the media I’ve corresponded with for quite a while—though I stepped away for a moment and apparently missed Andrew Arnold of Time.com… again! Andy Rolleri of Prima taught me a bit about the world of gaming during the lulls and of course, commented on all of the outrageous and amazing costumes such as: the storm trooper at the booth across from us, Captain America, cat woman, and large breasted women wearing corsets. Over all, it’s been a very good day—no headaches. At 8pm we took the books off the table in the hopes that nobody will pilfer our belongings and headed out. Come back tomorrow to hear about what I think will be the busiest day of the con and the panels with Charles Burns, Kim Deitch and Jessica Abel. |
